Joint statement by Hubert Védrine and Jean-Pierre Chevènement on the war in Ukraine and the Munich Security Conference.

“In light of the escalating crisis caused by the invasion of Ukraine and recent threats, decisions as significant as those resulting from the Security Agreement concluded this Friday in Paris, or the statements made prior to the Munich Security Conference, particularly those concerning the Europeanization of deterrence, deserve public debate. The recent statements by Donald Trump questioning the North Atlantic Treaty and the possibility of his victory in the fall cannot be ignored. They imply that European states should not be caught off guard by their consequences. They must assess the impact of such decisions.

Therefore, it would also be sensible to initiate a political debate on the substance today and to bring it to the attention of Parliament. This is a matter of democracy, but it is also a matter of responsibility to ensure that Europe can face upcoming challenges in good order. Everyone must become aware of this, lest we risk being pulled into a future spiral that we cannot control.”  Translated From Ledialogue
